Evans gets all clear for Vale tie

From the South Wales Argus, first published Wednesday 4th Sep 2002.

EBBW Vale have been handed a boost ahead of their Celtic League match against Munster on Friday night with the news that hooker Jon Evans does not have concussion.

Vale coach Mike Ruddock had thought that Evans would have to miss the match in Ireland after taking a blow to the head during last Friday's 19-0 defeat at home to Ulster.

But having come through training yesterday, Evans is expected to take his place.

But wing Nick Wakely is almost certain to miss the match with deep bruising to his shins, New Zealander Aaron Takarangi and Matthew Rowlands will be given their chances.

Talented outside half Mark Meenan is to wear the number 10 shirt and will take over the kicking responsibilities from Bryan Shelbourne, with Scott Mitchell taking his place on the bench.

Having looked impressive with his goal kicks on Friday night, Shelbourne missed his three attempts at goal against Ulster and Ruddock plans to let Meenan take over the kicking duties against Munster.

Adam Black will continue as prop with Ruddock set to re-assess the situation in October when captain Chay Billen returns from injury.

The Irish province name a slightly weakened side with several of their top names playing for Ireland against Romania on Saturday, but Munster can still call upon the formidable talents of Australian number eight Jim Williams and Irish international Mick Galwey in their pack.

Munster: J Stanton, J O'Neill, M Mullins, J Holland, M Lawlor, K Keane, D Malone, M Horan, J Blaney, S Kerr, M Galwey, M O'Driscoll, A Quinlan, C McMahon, J Williams Ebbw Vale: R Davies, M Rowlands, R Shorney, M Ridley, A Takarangi, M Meenan, B Shelbourne, A Black, J Evans, D Jones, O Booyse, N Edwards, K Tuipulotu, T Morris, W Thomas
