Leaders of the pack

From the South Wales Argus, first published Tuesday 7th Aug 2001.

A SEA of leather and metal swept through the streets of Gwent as hundreds of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts rolled into town.

For the second year in succession at the weekend, members of the Harley-Davidson Club Wales headed for the grounds of The Chainbridge Pub, near Usk, for a weekend dedicated to their love of bikes.

The field next to the pub was used as temporary campsite as the Newport-based club hosted The Chainbridge Rally with Harley-Davidson and other bike owners from across the country assembling for the successful event.

Men and women of all ages and professions lined up side by side, united by their shared passion for the world famous bike.

They camped in the grounds of the pub for the weekend which saw many of the 200 in attendance take to the roads for an 80-mile round trip across the beautiful Welsh countryside.

Among those attending were Caldicot couple, Barrie and Sue Davies who refuse to leave home without their beloved bikes.

"We are Harley enthusiasts. They are built for style and comfort and have real character and are not simply speed machines. They are our pride and joy and we even go on holiday with them!" Barrie explained.

Club president Ian Marshall said despite the rain many turned out: "There was a ride out on Saturday to Bwlch, Talgarth and Brecon and we all got wet together!"

Landlord of The Chainbridge, Steve Irish, said the weekend was a definite success: "It was a great weekend and everyone enjoyed themselves. Everybody was well behaved and there was no trouble."

Anyone interested in joining the club should contact Ian Marshall on 01633 681707.
